Overview

Six Reasons Principals Choose Drapeon Counsel

Grounded in Discretion

We treat every matter as private by default. Information is contained, not circulated.

Every Engagement Ends in Writing

Charters, pathway documents, and advisory letters — tangible outputs you can refer to and build on.

Paced to the Question

We do not rush engagements to free up capacity. Family matters deserve the time they require.

No Financial Conflicts

We receive no commissions, referral fees, or product revenues. Our only income is the agreed engagement fee.

Malaysia-Rooted Knowledge

We have advised family enterprises across the Peninsula for over fifteen years, and that context is present in everything we do.

A Small Practice by Design

We limit the number of active engagements deliberately, so that every client receives senior-level attention throughout.

In Detail

What Each Benefit Means in Practice

Professional Depth

Each of our counsellors has spent time inside large professional advisory structures — law firms, management consultancies, family offices — before choosing to work in a smaller and more deliberate practice. That history gives us vocabulary and analytical tools that we would not have otherwise. But it does not govern the pace at which we work, which is set by the nature of each engagement rather than billing targets.

We are familiar with governance frameworks, shareholder agreements, succession planning models, and the literature on family enterprise. We bring that knowledge to bear without using it to overwhelm or impress. The goal is always a clear conversation, not a demonstration of expertise.

Attentive Client Service

We respond to active-engagement clients within two business days as a rule. We hold regular review sessions as part of our longer engagements, and we are available by telephone during office hours Monday to Friday. When we are not available, we say so in advance.

We do not delegate client relationships to junior staff. The counsellor who leads an engagement is the one you speak with throughout. Continuity of relationship is not incidental to what we do — it is central to it.

Transparent Pricing

Our fees are fixed and agreed in writing before any work begins. Family Enterprise Counsel engagements begin from RM 3,300. Succession Mapping engagements begin from RM 2,900. A Counsel Letter is RM 750. There are no time-and-materials components, no surprise charges at the close, and no ongoing retainer unless separately agreed.

We consider transparent pricing to be a matter of professional respect. You should know what you are paying before you commit, and the fee should reflect the scope of the engagement clearly.

Meaningful Outcomes

We measure the value of an engagement by whether it produced something useful — a clearer framework, a written document that holds, a decision made with more confidence than before. We do not track billable hours or client-satisfaction scores. We ask, at the end of each engagement, whether the principal feels the time was well spent.

Principals who have worked with us on governance matters often come back for succession questions. Those who began with a Counsel Letter sometimes commission a longer engagement. We take that pattern as a reasonable indicator that the work is landing.

What Only We Offer

Distinctive Features of This Practice

The Counsel Letter Format

A written engagement with no prior relationship required. Send one letter; receive a considered response within ten business days. Few advisory practices offer this format, and none price it as accessibly as we do.

Principal-by-Principal Interviews

In family enterprise engagements, we speak privately with each principal before convening any group session. This practice surfaces what is actually on each person's mind, without the social pressure of the group setting.

Legal Advisor Handover Sessions

We end each major engagement with a structured handover session involving your existing legal counsel, so that our advisory work integrates cleanly into formal legal processes rather than sitting alongside them in isolation.

Written Consent for Information Sharing

Nothing from a private session is shared with other parties in the engagement without the explicit written agreement of the person who shared it. This applies between family members within the same engagement.
